Getting Started Guide: Start Here First
You are not here to create a perfect athlete, a perfect diet, or a perfect household.
You are here to create an environment where better sleep, better recovery, better fueling, and better conversations have room to grow.
Fueling Champions is built to help you understand how sleep, digital habits, nutrition, recovery, and the home environment work together. The goal is not to control every choice your athlete makes. It is to give you a clear map for creating conditions that support their health, wellness, performance, recovery, self-awareness, and responsibility over time.
Start With Sleep
Before beginning Unit 1: Fueling Fundamentals, complete Unit 11: Sleep & Rest and then Unit 12: The Always-Connected Athlete.
That order is intentional.
Nutrition matters. It supports energy, growth, training, recovery, and performance. But when an athlete is chronically tired, overstimulated, or under-recovered, better nutrition is harder to practice consistently. Sleep has a major influence on emotional regulation, resilience, mood, decision-making, recovery, and the daily choices athletes make.
A better night of sleep can create an immediate difference in how an athlete feels. Better nutrition builds its effects more gradually, often over days and weeks. Beginning with sleep gives your family an early, felt win — and creates a stronger foundation for the nutrition work ahead.
After Unit 11, complete Unit 12: The Always-Connected Athlete. Phones, social media, gaming, and constant connection are not going away. Unit 12 helps parents understand how the digital environment can affect sleep, focus, emotional resilience, recovery, and daily routines — and how to navigate it without turning every device into a battle.
Once you complete every lesson in Units 11 and 12, begin Unit 1: Fueling Fundamentals and continue through the nutrition units in sequence.
Your Course Pathway
Getting Started Guide
Read this first. Understand why the course is structured this way before beginning any unit.
Unit 11: Sleep & Rest
Complete every lesson in Unit 11 — Listen & Learn, Companion Guide, Reflect & Connect, and Champions Challenge — before moving on.
Unit 12: The Always-Connected Athlete
Complete every lesson in Unit 12 in the same way. Then begin the nutrition units.
Unit 1: Fueling Fundamentals
Start the nutrition units here and continue through each unit in sequence. You will not be starting from zero — the sleep and digital-habits foundation is already in place.
Complete Units 11 and 12 first — in full, and in order. When you reach Unit 1, the sleep, recovery, and digital-habits foundation you built in Units 11 and 12 will make the nutrition work easier to understand, practice, and sustain at home.
How Every Unit Works
Every unit in Fueling Champions follows the same four-part sequence. The order matters. Each part builds on the one before it.
The Champions Challenge always starts with one honest observation — not a correction or a new rule:
- “I noticed mornings are rushed, and neither of us is eating or drinking much before the day starts.”
- “I noticed our post-practice food is inconsistent because there isn’t much ready when we get home.”
- “I noticed our heaviest meals often land right before practice.”
- “I noticed we talk more about appearance than energy, strength, and recovery.”
Your role is to shape availability, routines, and the environment. Your athlete brings their experience, preferences, and ownership to the conversation.
What Parents Are Discovering
Parents who work through Fueling Champions often say they knew nutrition was important — but they did not fully understand how connected it was to training, recovery, energy, sleep, mood, and performance until they began.
Many parents gain a clearer map for creating a home environment that supports sleep, recovery, nutrition, wellness, and performance — instead of feeling like they’re guessing at individual decisions.
Parents often find that Reflect & Connect and the Champions Challenges open more natural conversations with teenagers — conversations that can be hard to start as children become more independent.
Some families listen to the audio lessons together in the car on the way to and from practices, games, and tournaments. The lesson becomes a shared starting point for a better conversation rather than a one-sided lecture.
Other families begin focused on one athlete and discover the course changes the whole household: grocery choices, meal routines, food language, and sometimes the way the family reconnects around the dinner table.
Your story may look like one of these. Or it may become something entirely your own.
If your athlete’s school uses Critical Reload Stream, you can follow the corresponding weekly units and lessons alongside them. This gives your family a shared language around sleep, recovery, nutrition, and performance — without turning every conversation into a lecture.
You Are Not Doing This Alone
The private Fueling Champions Parent Group is a place to share observations, questions, meal ideas, routines, and honest experiences with other parents. You do not need to have the perfect answer before joining the conversation — naming what you are noticing is often the first useful step.
